Films are one of the major source of entertainment for large number of people across the world. There are thousands of people who enjoy watching films, understand films and identify themselves with the characters that are portrayed in the films that they watch. Film industry is one of the booming industries in the European countries and United States of America. Large number of technical institutes and film companies have come up with an aim to improve the overall quality of films so that people can be get more entertained. IMAX is one such film corporation which look after different technical aspects of films and works on improving the quality with the help of various technology. However IMAX is most popular for the special film format that it created. And the film format has also been named as IMAX.

Speaking about IMAX we must say a few things about its history. History of IMAX dates back to the year 1967 when it was founded at the Expo in Montreal Canada. At the Expo IMAX demonstrated its invented technology and was well accepted by film technicians of that time. At that time IMAX was head quartered in Toronto in Canada and New York City in United States of America. But at present the company is based in Mississauga in the state of Ontario.
As far as the special film format named IMAX is concerned, it has to be mentioned that IMAX is a format which has got the capacity of displaying images of greater sizes and resolution than the general sizes and resolution of films that people watches in movie theaters. Generally the screen which is used for displaying IMAX films are of 22 meter in width and 16.1 meter in height. However larger screens may also be used for better display. At present IMAX is the most commonly used film format and is most largely used in displaying films in occasions like film festivals.
However it must be mentioned that the activity of IMAX is no more confined withing making film format. At present the film corporation is running several special movie theater of the same name in different parts of the world. At present the number of IMAX theaters is 280 and is spread in 38 countries but most of the theaters are located in Canada and United States of America. IMAX Dome, a variation of IMAX theaters are have also become very popular and are specially used on dome shaped theaters. The state of New Jersey houses the largest IMAX Dome in the world. However it may be mentioned here that the first IMAX Dome was installed in Reuben H Fleet Space Theater and Science Center in San Diego's Balboa Park in the year 1973 and the first IMAX 3D theater was established in the city of Vancouver in British Columbia.
Apart from these activities of IMAX include designing special movie projectors and movie cameras. IMAX cameras are technically very advanced and are one of the most costliest brands in the market of film equipments.
Over the summer of 2006, IMAX's stock fell markedly (by as much as 60%) with the announcement of an SEC investigation[2], falling again when the announced third quarter earnings were behind the previous year's.
The intent of IMAX is to dramatically increase the resolution of the image by using much larger film stock at a resolution comparable to about 10000 x 7000 pixels. To do this, 70 mm film stock is run "sideways" through the cameras. While traditional 70 mm film has an image area that is 48.5 mm wide and 22.1 mm tall (for Todd-AO), in IMAX the image is 69.6 mm wide and 48.5 mm tall. In order to expose at standard film speed of 24 frames per second, three times as much film needs to move through the camera each second.
Drawing the large-format film through the projector was a difficult technical problem to solve; conventional 70 mm systems were not steady enough for the 586x magnification. IMAX projection involved a number of innovations. William Shaw of IMAX adapted an Australian patent for film transport called the "rolling loop" by adding a compressed-air "puffer" to accelerate the film, and put a cylindrical lens in the projector's "block" for the film to be vacuumed up against during projection (called the "field flattener" because it served to flatten the image field). Because the film actually touches the "field flattener" lens, the lens itself is twice the height of the film and is connected to a pneumatic piston so it can be moved up or down while the projector is running.
